Temperatures are set to hit 29C in Offaly, Laois, Kildare, Westmeath and parts of Tipperary today as the country feels the effects of the August heatwave.

The cities of Cork and Belfast are set to experience highs of 27C, while temperatures in Wexford are expected to hit 26C.

Clare, Dublin and parts of Donegal, Tyrone and Fermanagh will experience highs of 25C, while the rest of the country is expected to hit 24C.

Met Éireann’s Status Amber High Temperature Warning for 18 districts comes into effect at 12pm today and will apply until 6am Sunday, while this warning will be extended to the whole country on Friday if temperatures continue to rise.

The meteorologist warned that it will be very warm and hot in Leinster and Munster today and this will continue into the weekend, with maximum temperatures generally between 27C and 29C and locally higher.

Temperatures are likely to reach 30C in localized parts of Leinster and Munster later in the day.

It will also be quite warm at night, with temperatures generally remaining above 15°C, making for uncomfortable sleeping conditions.

Meteorologist Brandon Creagh said Ireland is certainly experiencing a heatwave as temperatures top 25C in some parts and this is expected to last for five days.

He said there will be hot conditions across the country today.

“It’s going to be quite warm across the country, which is why this weather warning is still in effect for all counties,” he said.

“I would say this is likely to be the start of a heatwave as it is now a bit certain that we are likely to see widespread temperatures in excess of 25C over a five day period from yesterday to Sunday.

“Our yellow status alert criterion is typically 27C and above with overnight temperatures of 15C and at the moment it’s looking like 26C or 27C.”

In coastal areas, daytime temperatures may not be as high due to sea breezes.

The intense heat can also lead to heat stress, especially for the vulnerable demographic.

There will also be a high solar UV index in the coming days as there will be significantly less cloud.
