Revealed: Where Ireland ranks among the safest countries in the world

Iceland tops a list of the world’s safest countries to live and travel with Ireland in third place.

The 2022 Global Peace Index (GPI) ranks the world’s nations 163rd in terms of “peace,” analyzing data on their political stability, relations with neighboring countries, number of refugees, internal and external conflicts, military spending, incarceration rates, and “crime perceptions “, among other things.

It was compiled by the Sydney-based Institute for Economics & Peace, which states: “Over the past 14 years, peacefulness has declined [overall]with the average country value deteriorating by 3.2 percent.”

Ireland rose three places to third place this year according to the GPI, and also ranks behind Iceland as the second most peaceful country in Europe.

Ireland’s low scores (indicating a more peaceful country) spanned categories such as homicide, organized conflict, political instability, security and relations with neighboring countries.

Iceland has been named the safest and most peaceful travel destination due to its near-zero defense spending, low crime rate and avoidance of international conflicts. The country has topped the list every year since the GPI began in 2008.

New Zealand took second place on the list, with Denmark and Austria completing the top five.

Great Britain landed at number 34 behind Spain (29), Canada (12) and Germany (16); while the US ranked 129th, falling in the section of the list labeled “low” for peace, followed by countries like Haiti (115) and Cuba (98) in the “middle” section.

At the bottom of the list were South Sudan, Russia, Syria, Yemen and Afghanistan.

Ukraine has slipped 17 spots on the list to 153 this year after February’s Russian invasion.

However, according to the IEP, “Europe remains the most peaceful region in the world. The region is home to four of the five most peaceful countries, and only one country in Europe is outside the top half of the index.”

The Middle East proved to be the least secure and peaceful region.
