The Montagu Country Hotel

This relaxed hotel is located in the center of the pretty little town of Montagu, about 2.5 hours inland Cape Townreached via sprawling vineyards, orchards and beautiful winding mountain passes.

The hotel may be in the city but has a relaxed country vibe with lush gardens and cool pools at the back. Guests include Britons on road trips, locals on weekend breaks and (good) bikers from Germany.

The owners support local artists and there are regular exhibitions. Coco (as of course in Chanel), the resident Maine Coon cat, patrols the property.

The staff are absolutely wonderful – most of them have been here for years which is always a good sign.

The style

Art Deco decor can be found throughout the hotel

Art Deco, Art Deco and more Art Deco – the only original hotel of its kind in South Africa. From the magnificent facade to the lampshades, chairs and artwork, every detail is contemporary and beautifully restored.

Each en suite room in the main building is individually decorated, and there are two self-catering villas and a quirky African hut in the gardens. Most rooms offer views of the Langeberg mountains surrounding Montagu.

things to do

Watch the world go by from the terrace, wallow in the pool (it gets pretty warm here in the summer) or treat yourself to a spa treatment in the hotel’s wellness centre.

Take a stroll through this great little town, crammed with cafes, restaurants, historic buildings and places that sell the dried fruits the region is famous for. Take a bike ride with Flying Feet’s deliciously wacky Marchelle.

She also does ghost tours. But the biggest bill goes to the hotel owner and his pair of classic American cars.

The friendly PJ – sporting a smart flat cap, of course – takes you on a tour of the nearby Robertson Wine Route in a gleaming 1956 or 1964 Cadillac. Nothing I would have expected in rural South Africa!

The food

Enjoy a cooked-to-order breakfast under the giant trees on the garden terrace, light meals or home-made cakes on the terrace or in the Feathers & Flatcaps lounge bar.

In the evenings, tuck into delicious local specialties at Charlestons Restaurant – roast venison loin, Karoo lamb pie, oxtail stew, Malva tart (SA’s answer to sticky toffee pud). There are also great cocktails and many world-class local wines.
