Windjammers 2 is a worthy successor to the discus throwing action of the classic Neo-Geo movie. While it’s a bit light on modes, its core action has enough variety to be the next big competitive hit.

After making waves in the Clinton era, Windjammers saucer action has returned to a new generation with the release of Dotemu’s Windjammers 2. Is the dream of the 90s still alive, or is the title already alive? A little behind the times?

Windjammers 2 Reviews

With its origins in the large red Neo-Geo cabinets found in 7-11 and pizzerias, Windjammers series is a one-on-one title with an interesting story. The player must throw the flying saucer over the opponent’s forward line to score some points. The first score to 15 wins a set, and the best of two out of three sets wins the match.

Sounds like Pong or Tennis, right? However, there is much more to it than that. Gameplay almost plays out like a fighting game – each character is different based on speed and strength, and each character has a Power Toss attached to a Power Gauge. That’s not to mention the various shots the player has at his disposal – plops, curves, reverses, and custom shots that keep the player constantly trying.

Windjammers 2 took this recipe and ran with it. The roster has been updated from six characters to 10, with newcomers going to fit in naturally with the rest of the cast. Courtyard types have also greatly expanded – the beach and grass courts are joined by the likes of casinos and scrap yards. Each also has an interesting gimmick that varies by scoring – an absolute godsend when it comes to a competitive title like this.

Of course, all of this would be for nothing without the core gameplay. The team at Dotemu were fully aware of this when designing Windjammers 2, and the core gameplay is alive and well in this category. Classic Purists of the Data East need not worry – this 2022 title maintains the overall feel of the original while expanding on the formula. Even subtleties like adjusting the widescreen resolution instead of 4:3 help this item really shine.

Unfortunately there is very little in this package. Arcade mode serves as the game’s bread and butter, allowing players to take on a number of different opponents and participate in minigames both old and new. Players are given a certain amount of credits, but more can be earned by earning a certain amount of points. While it does manage to complete the recipe, it can also be completed fairly quickly.

There’s also a versus couch play mode, along with an online mode for those looking to take in the world. While we weren’t able to try this mode during our review period, we do appreciate how it includes cross-play functionality, online input lag, and one-person ping visibility.
