Rich rhymes: New prize for the best poet started

An annual award recognizing the best contemporary poetry by an Irish poet was unveiled at the opening of the annual Yeats International Summer School in Sligo last night.

The €3,000 prize was created by the Irish Independent in connection with the Yeats Society Sligo. The winner will be announced next summer at the 64th Yeats International Summer School, which coincides with the 100th anniversary of WB Yeats receiving the Nobel Prize in Literature in 2023.

The award is given to an Irish poet who has written the best single volume of poetry in a new collection of English writing.

It is open to any Irish poet living here or abroad.

Applications for participants will be announced in November along with the names of the judges.

“We believe this award will continue to nurture the great Irish tradition of bards and poets and provide recognition for the finest contemporary poetry by Irish poets working today,” said Susan O’Keeffe, Director of the Yeats Society Sligo.

“We also believe this award recognizes WB’s own practice of supporting and promoting poets – and poetry – and is a recognition of that generosity.” Rich rhymes: New prize for the best poet started
