The Duke of York gives up public life in 2019 after his disastrous interview on BBC Newsnight, where he talked about his relationship with sex offender Jeffrey Epstein.

“That Newsnight interview (which he actually believed was a victory until it was shown to the disbelieving, mocking public); the fleeing from castle to castle to avoid being served court papers; changing any conversations with the FBI, despite promises to cooperate with them; ludicrous “demand” to have his date in court when a New York judge has signed up the Duke’s trial into everyone’s diaries; and finally – and most embarrassingly – Giuffre’s “victim-shaming trick,” the oldest trick in the book and the dirtiest.”

“There were no victims to shame in this week’s conditions of settlement. Just tributes to ‘the bravery of Miss Giuffre and other survivors in standing up to protect themselves and others'” .”

“No more than one U-turn as a handbrake.”

Madeley now says there is “no way back for Andrew” after this week’s “humiliation”.

He wrote: “The steady stream of character witnesses who have unlucky enough to cross his path over the years have revealed things that many media outlets have known.

“He was a very nasty man – a tall, rude, bully.

“A good friend of ours once contracted to do some private household chores for the Duke and Duchess during their newlywed days.

“My friend – one of the most polite and kind people I know – reported that Sarah Ferguson is: ‘Lovely…really warm and friendly.” And Andrew? ‘Essibly the rudest and most annoying man I have ever met.’

“Indeed, my friend found the Duke so obnoxious that he quickly resigned from what would otherwise be a pleasant and well-paid shopper.

“The duke has finally met his destiny. Personality is destiny.”

In a statement included in court documents, Andrew expressed his regret over his relationship with Epstein and also vows to support sex trafficking victims

It read: “Prince Andrew regrets his relationship with Epstein, and commends the bravery of Miss Giuffre and other survivors in standing up for themselves and others.

“He pledged to express his regret over his relationship with Epstein by supporting the fight against sex trafficking and by supporting its victims.” Richard Madeley thinks 'the rudest man' Prince Andrew is a 'high-handed and authoritative bully'
