Richie Sadlier says he and his wife Fiona are “pretty surprised that we conceived naturally” after four years of trying to conceive

RTÉ football pundit Richie Sadlier is encouraging couples struggling to conceive to talk about it as he and his wife are expecting their first baby after fertility complications.

The former Ireland international and his wife Fiona battled to conceive for four years and were told by specialists she would not conceive naturally.

However, after rounds of IVF and many negative pregnancy tests later, the couple found out in May this year that Fiona was pregnant – and it had happened quite naturally.

Speaking of RTÉ The Late Late Show Tonight, Richie encouraged all couples struggling with fertility to talk about it with their friends and family as it has helped him and his wife tremendously.

“So Fiona is 22 weeks pregnant and we had a tricky journey to get to this place, having been told in May 2018 – like many people in the country – that we would not be able to naturally Way to get pregnant.” The former footballer told host Tubridy.

“So we then had to enter the world of fertility treatments, we did a round of IVF and nothing worked, so we went to Spain this September, I think that was the next step in the journey.

“But.. then in May we got a nice surprise that we got pregnant naturally.”

Richie added that he’s been posting about the exciting news on social media and has received so many replies from people struggling to conceive.

“We’ve been blown away by the response, but I’ve gotten so many private messages from people saying ‘I’m on this journey’ or ‘I’m about to get into it’ and I’ve always asked them if they told them had family friends.

“And so many people said ‘no, no’ that they couldn’t tell the boys or they just told a family.

“But we wouldn’t have made it through the last few years today if we hadn’t told our family and friends and gotten their support.

“We’ve both been in therapy too … and like I said tonight, it’s always better to talk about a scenario you’re finding difficult than to pretend you’re awesome.”
