Comedian Ricky Gervais has said he will never appear on the BBC hit show, which has previously featured stars such as Kate Winslet, Charles Dance, Daniel Radcliffe and Danny Dyer
Ricky Gervais mocked celebrities mourning their unknown ancestors on the show Who Do You Think You Are?
The comedian, 60, has taken aim at the BBC’s history programme, which features famous faces – including Kate Winslet, Charles Dance, Daniel Radcliffe and Danny Dyer – tracing their roots with help of professioners.
Ricky showed contempt for the celebrities who appeared on the show and mourned distant relatives they had never met.
“I like the way the actors cry. Like, ‘Your great great-grandmother, she’s a little sad…’ You don’t know her,” he laughs, according to the Daily Star.
“You too can cry for your great greatness… or go back to when we were chimpanzees. You do not know her! That was 200 years ago. What are you crying about? ‘ Ricky exclaimed.
The show has been on the air for 18 years, with the first episode coming out in 2004.
Since then, 157 famous faces have joined – such as Billy Connolly, Ian McKellen, Olivia Colman, JK Rowling, Judi Dench and the late Bruce Forsyth, tracing their genealogy on the BBC series.
But audiences shouldn’t expect to see Ricky again on the show anytime soon, as he said he would decline to participate if asked by the producers.
“I certainly won’t. Imagine talking on the phone and they say, ‘Oh and this is your great grandfather, Horatio Gervais. He was a prolific pedophile, beaten to death in prison’. I would say ‘Oh, poor Horatio,’ he quips.
“You’ll just find out the bad ***, won’t you?”
“I don’t like that,” he explained.
The comedian and actor recently won critical acclaim with the Netflix comedy After Life, in which he plays a grieving widow.
And he revealed that he wrote the character to make sure he didn’t have to change his appearance a lot while playing the role.
“I am not going to lose weight or put on weight for a role. I didn’t change my voice or my hair (for After Life) so I wouldn’t change my diet,” he shared.
“Also, I can choose clothes that I can keep later or I usually say, ‘I can wear this too,’ ‘ he joked.
“That’s why I don’t go to the gym, I can’t be bothered.”
