“Ridiculous” speed limits of 20mph have been criticized as cumbersome rules that don’t work in practice

PLANS to hit even more roads with 20mph speed limits have been called “ridiculous”.

Transport for London (TfL) announced in February that it would introduce new 20mph speed limits on four roads around London.

However, Jacob Rees-Mogg, who lives in West Harptree, Somerset, slammed the speed limits.

He told the Sunday Times Magazine: “20mph limits are ridiculous.

“They just obstruct the flow of traffic.

“People go for it when they’re suggested and later realize how annoying they are.

“It’s a microcosm of politics in general: opinion polls suggest something would be popular, and once you put it into practice, it’s not.

“People should be free to live their own lives as much as possible without government interference.”

Rees-Mogg, the Conservative MP for north-east Somerset, said that when it comes to speed limits on the roads, drivers should be able to live their own lives.

By 2024, however, TfL hopes to expand the project to 127 miles of 20mph road in the capital.

There are currently about 50 miles of road in the capital with a 20 mph speed limit.

TfL said it wanted to “ensure the safety of Londoners and visitors” by introducing lower speed limits on the road network.

It added that pedestrians and cyclists would be much less likely to be killed or seriously injured if hit at 20mph or less rather than 30mph.

Areas with a 20 km/h speed limit or 20 km/h zone have reported a reduction in pedestrian injuries and traffic congestion.

Other traffic calming measures such as narrowing the road and installing speed bumps are also often used in these areas.

However, critics say areas with these traffic calming measures damage vehicle suspensions by repeatedly driving over speed bumps and causing delays in emergency vehicle response times.

Wales plans to lower most national speed limits, where streetlights are no more than 200 meters apart – mainly in residential and built-up areas – to 20mph by April 2023.

Currently, the standard speed limit for these areas is 30 miles per hour.

Rees-Mogg’s outburst comes after restaurant critic Giles Coren admitted he was caught speeding 25mph in a 20mph zone on London’s Kentish Town Road.

He said: “If you can’t imagine what a speed like 25mph might look or feel like.

“I invite you to remember stepping down a hill in your new three-speed Raleigh Grifter when you were eight or nine years old.

“That would have been about 25 miles an hour.
