Rihanna has revealed that she fears postnatal depression and feels emotionally out of control after the birth of her baby.
The 34-year-old, who is preparing to welcome her first child with rapper Asap Rocky, spoke to American Vogue about her post-pregnancy hopes and fears.
As the magazine’s May cover star, Rihanna explained what scares her the most about having a baby, saying, “Postpartum depression.
“Will I feel emotionally out of control? Those are the stories I hear from other women that scare me.”
She also revealed that she is “praying” that her body will allow her to successfully breastfeed after reading about the benefits.
Since announcing her pregnancy in January, the Barbados-born singer has become known for pushing the boundaries of maternity style and said she hopes her pregnancy has “redefined what is considered ‘decent’ for pregnant women” after she had accepted her changing body.
She added: “My body is doing amazing things right now and I have no shame in that. This time should feel celebratory. Because why would you hide your pregnancy?”
Rihanna, who launched her lingerie brand Savage X Fenty in 2018, said she never considered changing her style after finding out she was pregnant.
She said: “When I found out I was pregnant I was like, ‘No way am I going to go shopping in a pregnancy aisle.

“Sorry – it’s too much fun dressing up. I’m not going to let that part go away because my body is changing.”
She also spoke about her relationship with Asap Rocky, 33, revealing that he “became (her) family” at the start of the Covid-19 pandemic.
“I just feel like I can handle every part of life by his side,” she said.
She added: “What I love most about us? Transparency on everything: how we feel, what our goals are, what our fears and insecurities are.
“The vulnerability of being able to say how you feel about each other.”
Though she had no firm plans for children, Rihanna said the couple definitely never ruled it out and accepted the pregnancy as soon as it was confirmed.
She said: “I wouldn’t say planning. But definitely don’t plan against it. I don’t know when I’ll ovulate or anything. We just had fun.
“And then it was just there during the test. I wasted no time. I called him in and showed him. Then the next morning I was at the doctor’s office and our journey began.”
Rihanna also opened up about her pregnancy cravings, revealing that she’s currently obsessed with tangerines with salt and sweet treats.
“It (the tangerine) must be with salt and only with salt, because in Barbados we take our fruit to the sea and water it.
“Trust me, it really is a thing.”
After not releasing a new album since 2016’s Anti, Rihanna told Vogue that she approaches new music differently: “I’m looking at my next project very differently than I wanted to release before.
“I think this path suits me better, much better.
“It’s authentic, I enjoy it and takes a lot of pressure off.”
