So what could go wrong?

Fines for invading a neighbor’s privacy

You need to make sure your smart doorbell won’t invade others’ privacy.

Last year a man was told he had to pay his neighbor a huge sum after a judge found using cameras violated data laws and caused harassment.

dr Mary Fairhurst, from Thame, Oxfordshire, claimed the Ring devices used by Mr Jon Woodard were “intrusive” and made her feel like she was being “continuously visually monitored”.

Amazon, which owns the Ring, is advising owners to make sure people know they’re being filmed by posting Ring stickers on their doors or windows.

You can use the privacy zones feature so that you only film what you own.

The police could take pictures without asking you

Law enforcement agencies can issue a warrant to search footage if it is needed for an investigation.

However, reports have recently surfaced that Ring – like Google’s Nest – will rarely allow police to get hold of footage without a warrant.

These are only for seriously urgent, life-threatening situations.

Ring has allegedly shared footage of homeowners with law enforcement without their knowledge on at least 11 occasions this year.

But Ring says it’s “just plain wrong for Ring to give anyone unrestricted access to customer data or video, as we’ve repeatedly made clear to our customers and others.”

“The law authorizes companies like Ring to release information to government agencies when the company believes an emergency involving the life of a person who is at risk of death or serious injury, such as kidnapping or attempted murder, warrants prompt disclosure.” ‘ a spokesman explained.

“Ring applies this legal standard conscientiously.”

If you don’t want this, you can prevent this by turning on end-to-end encryption – as long as your device supports it.

Bad Internet connection

If your internet is crashing or you are having a connection problem specifically with your ring, you should have it investigated.

This is because you might miss something important.

Your device may be too far from your router.
