Rio Ferdinand praised the character of Real Madrid, who fell from behind in the knockout stages of the Champions League for the third consecutive season as they beat Manchester City 6-5 in Wednesday’s semi-finals.

Riyad Mahrez put City ahead with a great finish that night, opening a two-goal lead in the tie.

However, Madrid staged a dramatic late comeback as Rodrygo scored twice in the space of three minutes to level the clash overall.

This gave Ancelotti’s side the momentum they needed to go into extra time and they were awarded a penalty in the 94th minute when Karim Benzema was brought down in the penalty area. The Frenchman straightened up and smashed the penalty into the bottom corner, sending Thibaut Courtois the wrong way.

City dominated possession and almost equalized through Phil Foden, whose header was tipped away by Courtois before Fernandinho was unable to capitalize on the rebound. Pep Guardiola’s men fought hard to equalize but it wasn’t enough as Madrid secured their place in this month’s final where they will face Liverpool in Paris.

The Reds secured a 5-2 aggregate win over Villarreal in their semi-final, despite a small comeback from Unai Emery’s side. Most recently, the two teams met in the quarter-finals of last year’s competition.

Ferdinand gave his verdict on Madrid’s performance and how they managed to get the win. He added that no one should “doubt” their qualities in order to get results.

“These players, they were there, they saw that. The fact that they have so many players in this squad who have won multiple Champions Leagues hasn’t given them a panic at any point in this tournament.”
