Rio Ferdinand triggered a go-to alert Manchester United finish Jude Bellingham – with the former United defender admitting it doesn’t matter who the club sign right now after wreaking havoc Champions League exit.
A lone attack from Renan Lodi is enough to convict United another early exit from leading European competition. And it left Ralf Rangnick’s the men had to face the reality that their season was effectively over after they were dropped from FA Cup last month.
While the focus will now shift to trying to land a top-four finish to salvage the current campaign, all eyes will be on the Old Trafford hierarchy ahead of an epic summer. United are bidding to appoint an elite manager and bolster their playing squad to make a tilt Premier League trophies – and with United increasingly likely to miss the Champions League, the Red Devils could struggle to lure their main targets to Manchester.
Whoever gets the nod to succeed Rangnick on a permanent basis has an almighty mission in their hands, with both Ferdinand and Paul Scholes admitted that United are still “many years away” from being challenged for titles.
And while those who like Mauricio PochettinoErik ten Hag, and more recently Thomas TuchelYes all linked With the top job at Old Trafford, it’s clear that the rebuilding work at United is much bigger than previously imagined.
But while Owen Hargreaves goes to great lengths to say that Bellingham was the man to help propel United forward, Ferdinand is adamant that the current turmoil at Old Trafford will outweigh any signings. “However, I don’t necessarily think it’s about who you sign,” he told BT Sport. “I was screaming at the start of the season ‘oh we’ve got’ [Cristiano] Ronaldo, we’ve got [Raphael] Varane now’. Big players.
“If the culture at the football club doesn’t fit, it doesn’t matter who you bring in. You need a manager who can guide the ship, and United don’t have that at the moment. We’ve seen enough. this season, people leaving this stadium or wherever they’ve played say ‘I don’t have enough X, Y or Z players in that game’.”
Bellingham is said to have been seen by United as the permanent solution to the midfield troubles that have plagued them over the past few years. United managed to lure the talented teenager back when he left Birmingham City in 2020 – just for Borussia Dortmund arrive bring them to a £25m deal.
