Rishi Sunak and Liz Truss in the last two of the Tory leadership contest

Former Chancellor Rishi Sunak and Foreign Secretary Liz Truss will fight to become the UK’s next prime minister after Penny Mordaunt was eliminated in the last round of elections.

Mr Sunak received 137 votes, Ms Truss 113 and Ms Mordaunt 105, with only the top two going to a vote of party members to choose the next Conservative Party leader.

Mr Sunak, the former Chancellor, appeared confident of getting the votes needed from colleagues in the Commons to guarantee his name would be on the ballot to be sent to party members in the summer.

But Foreign Secretary Mrs Truss and Trade Secretary Mrs Mordaunt battled to secure votes in the contest for second place on the ballot on another significant day in Westminster.

Following the result, Ms Mordaunt said: “Politics is not easy. It can be a divisive and difficult place. We must all work together now to unite our party and focus on the work that needs to be done.

“I am a One Nation, proud Brexiteer. My campaign presented a positive vision for the country I love so much and reminded me who we are meant to serve here.

“Our mission is not just to deliver on what we promised, but to win the fight against Labor in the next general election. I hope to be able to play my part in both.”

Mr Sunak’s campaign said he had secured a “clear mandate” from Tory MPs and would now work “day and night” to win the support of the Conservative membership.

Meanwhile, Ms Truss thanked her supporters, saying: “I’m ready to hit the ground running from day one.”

Mr Sunak denied giving votes to other Tory leadership candidates.

When asked if he had done so, he said in a clip that was broadcast: “Absolutely not. As you can see from the results just announced, this was a very close competition.

“And I’m really proud that I made it to the next stage. I thank all my colleagues for their support.

“All I’ve done all day today is talk to them, outline to them my vision for the country, outline that I’m the best person to beat Keir Starmer in the next election and I’m delighted me that I’m going to have this conversation with all our members and hopefully convince them as well.”

Labor Deputy Leader Angela Rayner said: “This Tory leadership contest is so terribly embarrassing that both candidates have been pulled from the TV debate.”

Mr Sunak and Ms Truss declined an invitation to a Sky News debate earlier this week, forcing the show’s cancellation.

Ms Rayner said: “You are hiding from the public and your record. The Tories have no leadership and no answers.

“They are incapable of governing. Only Labor can provide the fresh start the country needs.”

Before the results were announced at 4pm, Mr Johnson rounded out his final questions from the Prime Minister by welcoming the achievements of his tenure.
