First, Rishi Sunak claimed that his wife’s tax affairs were not of public interest.

He then accused those who questioned Akshata Murty’s finances of launching a smear campaign against him.

Tonight Ms Murty announced she is giving up her Non-Dom status which has saved her millions of pounds in UK taxes.

At the same time, the Chancellor revealed that he had held a US green card when he entered 11 Downing Street.

This double withdrawal shows that this was not a smear campaign, but a matter of public interest.

However, Mr. Sunak still has questions to answer. He must explain why it took a public outcry before his wife decided to change her tax rules.

And he must explain why, when he claimed to love this country today, he was the holder of a green card, which usually includes a legal commitment to “make the USA your permanent home.”

Mr Sunak was shamed into acting but he still hasn’t told the whole truth.

And the countries that have refused to condemn Russia must ask themselves how many more atrocities they will put up with.
