River Uck: level is falling, but property remains at risk

River levels in Buxted are “slowly falling” after earlier warnings residents should install flood defenses.

The River Uck was at risk of overflowing due to heavy rains, but the forecast now suggests the situation is slowly improving.

Government officials have urged residents to maintain flood defenses as the river could still rain heavily in the evening.

In a statement on the government website, a spokesman said: “River levels in Buxted are still high but they are now slowly falling after heavy rain on Thursday morning.

“The forecast is uncertain but there is a chance that some heavy showers could sweep through Sussex on Thursday evening which could cause river levels to rise again. Riverside properties in Buxted are encouraged to keep their flood defense products installed if they have them.”

On Thursday, November 3, the Environment Agency urged residents to “act now” to save their homes, including shutting off electricity and gas and moving to safety.

Residents have been warned that the situation could get worse and to maintain protective measures.

Another update is expected on Friday, October 4 at 11 a.m.
