Roadshow Antiques specifically traces the history of nursing

Antiques Roadshow will trace the history of nursing from the 19th century to the present day in a BBC One special.
Fiona Bruce will join comedian Jo Brand, who worked as a psychiatric nurse for 10 years before moving into entertainment, in this month’s Antiques Roadshow – BBC Nursing Special One.
Brand, who has acted in the BBC medical comedy Beginning of a Geriatrics unit in the NHS, will provide details about her experience at emergency mental health clinics as well as panto hospital.
In the episode, Bruce also learns more about the nurses and midwives that inspired Call The Midwoman.
The popular BBC show is based on the best-selling memoir of former nurse and midwife Jennifer Worth, who passed away in 2011, a year before the first series aired, and Antiques Roadshow will watch. Take a closer look at the author’s own life story.

The episode of the historical show was filmed on location at St Thomas’ Hospital and St Bartholomew’s in London, and will include stories from the Windrush generation.
From 1948 to 1971, people from the Caribbean countries came to the UK as part of a plan to help fill the post-war labor shortage.
The first citizens from this wave – some 500 workers from Jamaica, Trinidad and Tobago – boarded the HMT Empire Windrush, which docked at Tilbury, Essex, on June 22, 1948.
Welsh nurse Betsi Cadwaladr and British Jamaican Mary Seacole – contemporaries of Florence Nightingale, who also treated patients during the Crimean War – were also held.
Elsewhere, military expert Mark Smith meets a naval nurse who had traveled to the Falklands War on a cruise ship converted to treat soldiers wounded in the conflict.
Ronnie Archer-Morgan also tells the story of a nurse who helped pioneer a compassionate approach to community care for Aids patients at the height of the epidemic in the 1980s.
The show also looks at items with a sense of care such as medals awarded for valor, early uniforms, cartoons, and medical equipment.
– Roadshow Antiques – A Nursing Special airs on BBC One on Sunday 26 February at 7pm.
