Roberto De Zerbi can win the first victory over Antonio Conte

Albion coach Roberto De Zerbi will be hoping to prevail against compatriot Antonio Conte.

De Zerbi has faced the Spurs head coach four times in his managerial career, losing three games and a draw.

But he says there are some good reasons for that.

De Zerbi said: “Antonio worked for Inter.

“Inter were a great side in those years.

“Sassuolo too – but Inter won Serie A.

“It’s always very strong to play against him, Antonio.

“He’s a great coach, but his players and squad have always been a fantastic team.”

De Zerbi’s first game against Conte came in October 2019 in a 4-3 defeat by Internazionale.

Inter took a 4-1 lead and despite some late goals, Sassuolo failed to beat the visitors.

One thing that has been talked about several times during the appointment of Albion’s head coach is how he transformed Sassuolo from a struggling side battling relegation into a possession-oriented side pushing for Europe.

In the 2019/20 season, Sassuolo was only beaten by one team in terms of possession – Contes Inter.

De Zerbi’s next game against Inter was a thrill that Albion fans may have to get used to during his tenure.

Away in June 2020 at the San Siro, his side went 1-0 up against Inter for four minutes after suspension before conceding twice just before half-time.

Domenico Berardi then equalized for the visitors in the last ten minutes before Inter struck back five minutes later with another 3-2.

De Zerbi was the last to laugh when his side equalized to make it 3-3 in the 89th minute through Giangiacomo Magnani.

That would be the only point de Zerbi has against his fellow Italian.

In November 2020, Sassuolo were swept aside 3-0 at home to Contes Inter and beaten 2-1 in April last year, despite having 71% possession.

In fact, De Zerbis Sassuolo had more possession in each of those four games against Inter.

De Zerbi started his career at AC Milan but never played for Rossoneri.

Conte was a stalwart companion for Juventus from the 1990s through the early 2000s.

He has won on two previous visits to Amex, with Chelsea and Spurs.

De Zerbi said: “I don’t think we play the same style, but maybe we have the same passion, the same vision of football.

“Football was our life for us.
