Roberto De Zerbi hopes Lewis Dunk will be picked for England

Roberto De Zerbi would love to help Lewis Dunk get an England recall.

But he won’t tell Gareth Southgate who to put in his squad.

The Albion skipper leads his side in Brentford tonight (8pm) and is aiming for a third away win of the season.

De Zerbi is aware that dunk only has a cap and believes he’s good enough to add more.

The Albion manager said: “I would love to help him play for the national team.

“It’s not right when I talk about the national team, about the other players, other defenders. I can only talk about my players and I don’t like it when another coach talks too much about my players.

“But if you ask me if he’s ready or if he’s good enough to go into the national team, I would say, ‘Yes, for me, sure’.”

De Zerbi was impressed with Dunk and Adam Webster, who they now saw in person. He said: “I think dunk is underrated as a player because his level is top for me.

“I know he’s from Brighton, I know he’s a Brighton icon – but when I look at him I see a great player. And Webster too.

“I couldn’t understand from the video that the level of Dunk and Webster is so high. They are very good defenders and have a great personality to play with the ball.” Roberto De Zerbi hopes Lewis Dunk will be picked for England
