Robin Williams leaves a lasting impression on string creator David Simon

The episode is the start to “Murder” in that it focuses primarily on a single victim rather than the cop. Williams’ character is ill-equipped to handle the cold emotional response of the officers tasked with investigating the murder. He was also lost while trying to comfort his two sons. This is a more serious, serious, real Robin than he’s been in a feature film up until that point.

Simon was on set for the episode, and was impressed by the actor’s radical commitment to the character. When he told Dave Itzkoff in the biography of the author “Robin”:

“‘The frenzied stand-up routines, the euphoria, the stories of machine guns and impersonations – all stifled as he tries to live in the shattered soul of a recently deceased husband and father. wife because of sudden, irrevocable violence.’ However, Simon commented, ‘He, I see, he was the actor with the most characters on that set.’ “

Between installations, Simon gave Williams a tour of the morgue and showed him a series of dollhouse-sized dioramas depicting various crime scenes. The actor will guess what goes on in each situation and Simon will give him the answer. Williams was eventually called back to work, at which point the screenwriter got to watch the star do her strange thing to lighten the film’s bleak mood. As interesting as this is, Simon is even more fascinated by the way Williams re-enters the role.

“Before Simon left the set, he caught up with Robin in a hallway, ‘using the few minutes remaining before filming to face the wall and reinvent himself with whatever horror he was doing. He’s also sweating, as if it’s there. I used everything he had to get to that warm climax and cause big laughs.
