Jurgen Klopp denies Liverpool is the people’s choice for the Premier League title
Manchester City midfielder Rodri has repeated Pep Guardiola’s claim that ‘everyone’ supports Liverpool in the Premier League title race – but says his team wants to ‘change history’ of English football.
The Citizens were three points clear of Jurgen Klopp’s side at the top of the table with three games to go and demolished Newcastle 5-0 to capitalize on Liverpool’s 1-1 draw with Tottenham a day earlier. After the game, a jubilant Guardiola made headlines by attacking the Reds, which forced Klopp to react on Monday.
Now Rodri, who clinched the title last season, has chimed in on the debate that got fans talking after a dramatic weekend in the title race, telling Sky Sports: ‘Liverpool have a better history than us, that is normal and natural Liverpool is a top 2, top 3 team of all time in this country.
“So it’s normal for the group to support them. But we are here to change history and we are here to be part of the modern era of the Premier League and one day be as big as Liverpool are now as a club.”
The 25-year-old was on the scoresheet in their emphatic win over Newcastle, scoring City’s third goal of the game before his boss stole the spotlight with his controversial comments. “A week ago everyone in this country was supporting Liverpool, the media and everyone,” Guardiola told BeIN Sports.
“Obviously because Liverpool have an incredible history in Europe. Not in the Premier League, they’ve won one in 30 years, but that’s not a problem at all. The situation is what it is, we have to take nine points, maybe six. ” , depends on what happens the next two games.

“Now it’s about Wednesday [away to Wolves ], a real final for us. We’re trying to win. Our destiny is in our own hands, we must think of ourselves. One point, three points, nothing changes.”
The 51-year-old doubled his point and went on to say: “Liverpool are the most important teams in history alongside United in terms of titles, history, legacy and drama. We’ve been there for the last 10, 11, 12 years I know we get uncomfortable sometimes but I don’t care.
“People want Liverpool to win more than us, that’s not an issue, that’s normal. They have more supporters around the world. That’s not the question, today before the game starts people are supporting us more than ever after a one-off game , because they know we can count on these players even if we’re not in the Champions League.”
When asked about Guardiola’s claim ahead of his side’s competitive game at Aston Villa on Tuesday, Liverpool manager Klopp replied: “I have no idea if the country supports us. It’s not the feeling I get when we go to other places, it’s actually the opposite. I live in Liverpool. A lot of people here want us to win the championship, that’s for sure. But even here it’s probably only 50 percent.”
