Chelsea can’t make any new signings under the special license they operate under, meaning Thomas Tuchel has seemingly missed out on snagging new blood
The sanctions against Chelsea owner Roman Abramovich appear to have cost the club a chance to sign Gabriel Slonina.
The British government has frozen Abramovich’s assets in the country due to his past ties to the Russian leader Wladimir Putin in the middle of the war Ukraine. The club now operates under a special license that prevents them from negotiating new contracts with their players.
Chelsea however, are also unable to attract new players, meaning they have to put on hold any possible deals they were hoping for. transfer expert Fabrizio Romano claims the Blues are in advanced talks to bring in Chicago Fire Goalkeeper Slonina.
But the sanctions mean the £5m deal has now fallen through. Slonina was due to be signed in the summer before being loaned to Chicago until 2023.
The USA Under-21 international is just 17 but has played in all four of Fire’s MLS games so far this season, keeping three clean sheets.

Meanwhile, Mason Mount has admitted Chelsea players have been kept in the dark about the crisis at Stamford Bridge following Abramovich’s decision to sell the club.
He said: “I’ve been at the club since I was six and nothing like this has ever happened so it can be an issue.
“In the beginning and even now we don’t really know where it’s going and what’s going to happen the next day. So it’s difficult. But we are focused on our football and what we can do is try to win as many games as possible.
“Obviously I’m away with England so that stuff is kind of parked and I’m focused on serving in England and what I can do while I’m away. And when I return to Chelsea next week I’m sure we’ll be updated on what’s going on because I haven’t heard anything lately.”
There are four potential buyers who have been shortlisted to become Chelsea’s next owner. These include Boston Celtics owner Stephen Pagliuca, fellow American Todd Boehly and Swiss partner Hansjorg Wyss, a consortium led by Sir Martin Broughton and Lord Coe, and the Chiefs of the Chicago Cubs, the Ricketts Family.
