The Russian tycoon was sanctioned by the British government on Thursday meaning Roman Abramovich no longer has control of Chelsea and other assets
Roman Abramovich has been sacked as director of Chelsea football club by Premier League.
The 55-year-old has been added to the UK list of individuals sanctioned when the government froze his assets on Thursday after the Russian invasion Ukraine in a move intended to derail his efforts to offload the club.
And now the Premier League has made a decision to remove the director of the host club The Blues.
A Premier League statement read: “Following the imposition of sanctions by the UK Government, the Premier League Board has sacked Roman Abramovich as director. Chelsea Football club.
“The Board’s decision does not affect the club’s ability to train and play, as set forth in the terms of the Government-issued license, which expires on 31 May 2022. “
Abramovich Announces he’s ready to sell Chelsea, ending his 19-year tenure at Stamford Bridge amid calls for Russian oligarchs living abroad to face consequences after Vladimir Putininvasion of Ukraine.
But government intervention brought that to a halt to prevent Abramovich from profiting from any potential acquisition.
He has previously said that proceeds from any sales will be donated to war victims.
The government has issued a special permit allowing the execution of schedules, salaried staff and ticket holders to matches.
Chelsea will not be able to buy or sell players or offer new contracts, while sanctions are imposed on Abramovich.
Chelsea’s shirt sponsor, Three, has requested that the West Londoners “temporarily suspending” its transaction with the club.
Three asked to “remove our branding from shirts and around the stadium until further notice”.
The company added: “We recognize that this decision will impact many Chelsea fans, who follow their team passionately.
“However, we feel that given the circumstances and the punishment the government has in place, it’s the right thing to do.”
The sale of Chelsea is still possible, however, after an agreement is signed with government officials, according to Daily telegram. It is reported that Abramovich has instructed The Raine Group – the commercial bank that oversees the purchase – to continue the search for a buyer and finalize the takeover.
