Roman army re-enactment at Fishbourne Roman Palace

VISITORS to a palace can travel back in time 2,000 years to watch soldiers reenact the Roman army.

The event will take place over the weekend of July 30th and 31st at Fishbourne Roman Palace and Gardens.

The clash of swords, the crack of shields and the blare of trumpets ring out in the palace as the Ermine Street Guard set up camp on the grounds of the largest Roman homeland north of the Alps.

The leading Roman army re-enactment company will perform in the palace’s formal garden, firing artillery and live demonstrations of how the Roman army prepared for battle.

A range of Roman-themed activities are also offered throughout the weekend, and visitors can explore the mosaics and replica grounds of the country’s largest AD 75 Roman dwelling.

Sarah Parker, House Manager at Fishbourne Roman Palace said: “Our Roman Army weekend is always popular and gives a taste of what the palace would have been like when the Romans were here.

“The Ermine Street Guard’s powerful displays are an exciting watch for adults and children alike. There will also be plenty of fun activities throughout the day – and even the chance to try Roman dishes in our café.”

Fishbourne Roman Palace and Gardens, owned and cared for by the Sussex Archaeological Society, was once the grandest Roman palace in Northern Europe.

Visitors can stroll through the recreated Roman gardens – the earliest Roman gardens found anywhere in the country – and enjoy the largest collection of in situ mosaics in Britain.

The Roman Army Weekend takes place on July 30th and 31st from 10am to 5pm.

It is recommended to book tickets online in advance to guarantee entry. Prices start from £15 for adults and £8 for a child.

Pre-booked tickets are available at a slightly discounted price compared to those purchased on the day of the event.

Visit the Sussex Past website for ticket information.
