Chelsea‘s record signing Romelu Lukaku has been accused of making the ‘wrong’ choice in leaving Inter Milan to return to Stamford Bridge this summer.

The Blues spent £97.5million to bring the Belgian back Chelsea after the sale everton in 2014, but Lukaku has been more of a spectator in recent weeks as Kai Havertz led the line. The 28-year-old found momentum immediately upon his return but things haven’t been the same since picking up an injury in October.

Adding to the month-long injury, Lukaku also caused a stir when he hinted at a potential Inter return after just six months and his relationship with Thomas Tuchel and the fans has never been the same since. And due to his ongoing struggles, Lukaku has been accused of making the “wrong” choice this summer.

This is after former Manchester United Star Patrice Evra, who believes he should have stayed in Italy after a successful season at Inter. Evra told Prime Video: “People who criticize him have short memories. Because when he got to London he scored and did well; then he got injured and said he misses Inter.

“He ended up making a bit of a mess with that one [Chelsea] fans. He really wanted to return to Chelsea, he should have stayed at Inter after such a high-quality season. He made that choice there, which for me is wrong.”

Lukaku was seen as the missing piece in the Chelsea jigsaw puzzle earlier this season when the signings made for Tuchel under Frank Lampard began to gel, with just one focus missing. But after a quick start, Lukaku went downhill and is yet to score First League so far this calendar year.

Despite the difficult situation Lukaku is in, Tuchel has defended Chelsea’s decision to sign the Belgian as he said: “We signed Roma because we believed in him and we still do. Of course it didn’t work until now, but it worked can switch.

“We had a reason to spend that amount of money and he had reasons to come here and close his Chelsea chapter. This is still ongoing.” But Lukaku angered fans in late 2021 when he told Sky Italy he only joined Chelsea because Inter hadn’t offered him a new contract.

Lukaku said: “I told myself there is only one team I could possibly see myself in – Chelsea. I didn’t think of going there but eventually they came in for me and that’s why I asked [Inter boss Simone] to go Inzaghi.

“The fact that they didn’t try to get me to sign a new contract bothered me a bit, it even hurt me. If Inter had offered me a new contract, I would have stayed 100 percent. That goes without saying self.”

Following his comments and given his form has plummeted, Lukaku has been linked with a return to Inter this summer but after Chelsea spent £97.5million on him nine months ago it’s unlikely that they would let him go cheap . The money Chelsea offered was too much for Inter to turn down, so it’s unlikely they’d be willing to give it all back.

But they have been ousted from the top of Serie A by bitter rivals AC Milan, although Inter can come within a point of their title rivals if they win their game. Lukaku scored 24 league goals last season as Inter won the title for the first time in a decade, but has only scored five Premier League goals since returning to Chelsea.
