Thomas Tuchel defends Romelu Lukaku after unnamed performance in victory at Palace

Romelu Lukaku returns to Chelsea as the missing piece.

Now, the £97.5m striker is at risk of joining a long list of high-profile strikers who have turned out to be costly mistakes at Stamford Bridge.

Chelsea striker Lukaku is struggling with form and confidence and needs a change of fortune to stop the likes of Fernando Torres, Alvaro Morata and Andriy Shevchenko.

Torres flopped £50m, Morata never lived up to expectations following his £60m move and Shevchenko was the £30m dream signing of Roman Abramovich, who never lived up to his fame. him while at Chelsea.

Chelsea manager Thomas Tuchel is honest enough to admit that making sure Lukaku doesn’t go down the same path is “up to me”, but is confident the No 9 will turn out fine.

It is possible that previous strikers have struggled to be judged against Didier Drogba – their best and most successful striker in recent history – but Chelsea are also said to not play to Lukaku’s strengths.

“There’s even a history of strikers struggling at Chelsea so it’s not the easiest place in the world for strikers,” said Tuchel. I don’t know why it’s like this but it probably is.

“Chelsea is a team that is considered to have a solid defense, rich in physical strength. We demand a lot from our strikers in terms of defence. We wanted to be a physical team, working hard and weren’t afraid to turn it into a physical game and not just a game of dexterity, which could play a role.

“We had a lot of games throughout the year together where we created a lot of opportunities, a lot of deliveries and had a bit of a hard time converting. Now in a time when we try to create so many big chances for our strikers, this is the normal period in a long season.

“We are interested in this topic, clearly aware and as always, it is not just an explanation for the problem. It is a very complicated sport, we try to keep playing with faith in what we do and belief. It was a team effort. From there we go.

“However, we can also play and win games without any players. This is our job, what we want to do, what we strive for when it comes to injuries and Corona cases. It is up to us, on me to adapt and find a solution. Romelu will always be part of the solution.”

FOOTBALL PLAYER FERNANDO TORRES

He was signed for £50m, but they got him through to the best of him and, despite winning the Champions League, never regained his form at Liverpool.

ANDRIY SHEVCHENKO

Shevva is the dream contract of Roman Abramovich. It became a nightmare under Jose Mourinho, who mocked him for playing too much golf.

ALVARO MORATA

The Spaniard joined Chelsea for a record £60m in 2017 – but it never worked out. Ironically, the coach at the time, Antonio Conte, wanted Romelu Lukaku.

MATEJA KEZMAN

Jose Mourinho didn’t make many mistakes his first time in charge of Chelsea – but this didn’t work. Only managed four targets before being shipped.

TIMO WERNER

The Germany international has never shot – despite winning the Champions League and his stats aren’t as bad as you might think. Can go this summer.

The stark truth is that Lukaku comes in with the hope that he will deliver the goals to transform Chelsea from a team – which won the Champions League last season – into a more consistent title-winning team.

But Lukaku has only scored five times in the Premier League and two in Europe; Chelsea looked to be a more complete, versatile team as they used Kai Havertz as a misguided number nine because they didn’t have enough services from the Belgian star.

Lukaku played 90 minutes against Crystal Palace on Saturday and despite only touching the ball seven times, Tuchel must certainly try to fulfill a contract record.

To be fair, Lukaku has scored in both Club World Cup games – and now the season-ending Champions League season has come with favorites Chelsea to advance to the quarter-finals.

Tuchel admits he is in favor of dropping the away goals rule in Europe and says it will not change his approach in either match.

Tuchel added: “For us, it’s nothing to change the approach to tomorrow’s (Tuesday) game. We will try to keep a clean sheet, try to attack as well as we can.

“If things change a little bit in the approach to the second leg, we don’t have to think so much ‘Do we have to score? What do we do?’

“It’s going to be easier to adapt, let’s start two games and play them, do the math and if we hit the level we’ll go to extra time.”
