Ron Johnson spreads misinformation about whale-killing windmills

Sen. Ron Johnson (R-Wis.) gushed about misinformation on Fox News when he repeated the unproven claim that windmills have been deadly to whales. (See the video below.)

“All this climate change alarmism is based on bad science and completely ignores the effects of clouds as a heat sink,” Johnson inaccurately told host Dagen McDowell on Sunday. “Again, the climate has always changed and will always change. I’m not an alarmist and I don’t deny it either. …According to a previous report from your network, these windmills are killing whales.”

The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration also said that there are some “No known links between recent large whale deaths and ongoing offshore wind measurements.”

Fox News itself has aired the evidence-free claim and recently promoted a documentary promoting the theory that offshore wind projects are linked to a rise in whale deaths and strandings. according to Media Matters for America.

Johnson’s climate disinformation in Sunday’s post also caught the attention of liberal PAC Meidas Touch. As the group noted, the senator did not mention the expert opinion that the rise in global temperatures over the past century and a half was driven primarily by increases in carbon emissions resulting from industrialization.

Johnson and Fox News did not immediately respond to HuffPost’s request for comment.
