Rosanna Davison says her surrogate is caught in a ‘terrifying’ situation in Ukraine

Rosanna Davison said her Ukrainian surrogate is still trapped in her hometown and it’s a “scary” situation for her.

When the invasion first broke out last February, Ms Davison contacted the Ukrainian, who had her first child, Sophia, 2, via surrogacy in November 2019.

She asked her surrogate to come and stay with Sophia and twins Hugo and Oscar (1), but shortly thereafter the woman’s hometown of Kherson was surrounded and she has been trapped there ever since.

“There is no major news at the moment, but they are in the city of Kherson, which is occupied by the Russian military, at the moment,” she said.

“It wasn’t destroyed or attacked in the same way as Mariupol, for example, but you never know what’s going to happen every day and if things are going to change. It’s scary. But I am in constant contact with them, they are fine, they are surviving for the moment.”

As part of her efforts to support the Ukrainian refugees, she recently donated supplies to the Clarendon Street, Palyanytsya shop opened by Art of Coffee owner Ruslan Mocharskyy.

Ms Davison said the war was on Ukraine made her appreciate her life in Ireland.

“Since the war started I’ve heard a lot of people say we’re so lucky to live in Ireland where it’s so peaceful and we probably don’t realize how lucky we are,” she said.

“Maybe we’re complaining about the cost of living or the traffic, but I suppose in the context of what’s happening in Ukraine and what I’m hearing about how they’re surviving under lockdowns and with limited food, other supplies and medicines. We have a good quality of life here and it’s definitely made me more grateful for everything we have here and the freedom, we can get out there and go whenever we want and we don’t have to turn off the lights at some point of time and airstrikes.”

Ms Davison spoke today at the launch of the TanOrganic BFF tanning brush and also offered advice to couples struggling with fertility.

“You need to take care of each other within your relationship, but also find support outside of your relationship because it often happens that the male partner picks you up every time you have a loss or an obstacle on the way while you have to search as Individuals and as a couple, one after the other,” she said.
