Man Utd v Brentford: game in pictures

Marcus Rashford was criticized by Roy Keane after Manchester United First League Victory over Brentford despite the England striker not being in the game.

Rashford was an unused replacement for the 3-0 winwhich came with permission Bruno Fernandes‘opener, a Cristiano Ronaldo Penalty and Raphael Varane’s first goal for the club. Edinson Cavani came on in a late attacking change but Rashford stayed on the bench.

Former United captain Keane was in the studio for Monday night’s Sky Sports coverage of football, executing rule over his old club. While United put in one of their better performances of recent times in Ralf Rangnick’s last home game as manager, the Irishman still aimed for United’s No10.

“He doesn’t seem to have much confidence,” Keane said of the 24-year-old. “I’m going back, I think he lost sight of the ball, with all his stuff off the field.

He has that experience, but he doesn’t shuffle his game. Even if he plays through the middle, I said he plays like a kid [against Liverpool].

“It’s like he didn’t learn from the game. I think he lost the tiger’s eye and is struggling to get it back. I think the hunger, he needs to get the hunger back and run like Elanga tonight. Rashford lost that hunger, which is huge for a player.”

Rashford was an unused substitute against Brentford

Rashford is understood determined to reclaim his starting place at United despite a difficult season. He has scored just five goals for United since returning from injury in October, the last of those goals coming in January.

New coach Erik ten Hag should give the England international a chance to rekindle his club career. The Dutch boss is Successor to interim manager Ralf Rangnick ahead of the 2022/23 season.

With Rashford on the sidelines, Rangnick has often preferred to use Anthony Elanga in a wide attacking role. The youngster provided an assist for Fernandes’ goal and was praised by the caretaker manager after the win.

Rangnick has often used Elanga while Rashford has stayed on the bench

Rangnick also hinted that there will be plenty of upheaval over the summer. A number of United players are out of contract including Paul Pogba and Juan Mata while there could also be some sales.

“We haven’t been able to speak before,” Rangnick said when asked about his conversations with Ten Hag. “Erik’s focus is on winning the Dutch league, our focus was on our games.

“It is obvious that some players will leave and there is a need for high quality players. I truly believe that if everyone works together we can get Man Utd back to where we need to be.”
