Royal Academy Of Dance advises everyone to check the dance teacher’s qualifications

The Royal Academy of Dance (RAD) has advised members of the public to check a dance teacher’s credential before signing up for classes, following the release of new research.

The survey found that 89% of adults in the UK are unaware that there is currently no legal requirement for a dance teacher to have an appropriate teaching qualification to lead a dance class or school.

Nearly three-quarters (74%) of adults surveyed agreed that they would like to check a teacher’s certification before taking a dance class or sending their child to a dance school.

Three-quarters (75%) also agree that it would be helpful to have a service to check if dance teachers are suitably qualified to teach dance before attending or sending their children.

The survey was conducted by YouGov on behalf of RAD.

The organization said it wanted to reinforce the importance of learning to dance with a qualified teacher and encourage the public to seek information.

Although most adults are unaware that there is currently no obligation for someone to be appropriately qualified in dance to teach a class to the public, a large number (54%) of those Surveyees agree that it will be a factor influencing their decision about choosing a class.

RAD has also now launched the Global Register of Teachers, a new tool that allows the public to search for a local dance teacher.

The organization says only dance teachers who meet RAD’s professional standards and training requirements are registered with RAD and can be viewed on the registry.

RAD CEO, Tim Arthur, said: “At RAD, we believe that everyone can dance – but not everyone can teach dance.

“Incompetent teachers devalue the whole art form because one bad experience can put a person off dancing for life, not to mention injury.

“On the contrary, a great experience with an experienced and knowledgeable teacher can be life changing.”

Mr Arthur added that he was “not surprised” that such a high number of people were unaware that a degree was not a legal requirement to teach dance.

“I hope that the new RAD Teacher Register will allow the public to make an informed decision when looking for a dance teacher,” he said.

“In fact, we have also created a checklist that the public can use, which includes a list of questions they may want to ask when they find any dance teachers with level, because ultimately we want to inspire the world of dance.” Royal Academy Of Dance advises everyone to check the dance teacher’s qualifications
