Prince Philip: Royal family commemorates death anniversary

The royal family paid an emotional tribute to Prince Philip on Instagram a year after his death.

A poem, The Patriarchs – An Elegy, by poet Laureate Simon Armitage was shared on the royal family’s official Instagram account.

Her caption read: “In memory of His Royal Highness the Duke of Edinburgh on the first anniversary of his death.

A line from the poem reads: “To presumptuously praise a man on such an occasion is to stand up for a whole generation – this crew, whose survival has always been the stuff of a small miracle, who came ashore in orange-crate coracles, has brilliantly fought wars, tricked out triumphs at sea with flaming decoy boats and evasive torpedoes.”

Exactly one year ago today, just after noon, it was announced that Prince Philip had died peacefully in his sleep at his home in Windsor Castle.

His death was just months before his 100th birthday.

Prince Philip’s funeral took place on April 17, 2021, a week after his death. The service was attended by a limited number of people due to Covid restrictions.

He was buried privately in the royal vault of St George’s Chapel in Windsor Castle. But this will not be his final resting place.

When the Queen dies, Prince Philip’s body will be transferred from the Royal Vault to the King George VI Memorial Chapel, also in St George’s, where the couple will be buried together. The chapel itself can be visited by the public.

The Duke of Edinburgh was buried in a lead-lined English oak coffin made for him over 30 years ago.

A memorial service was held in honor of Prince Philip last month.

Among those in attendance were the Queen, Charles, the Duchess of Cornwall, the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge, the Countess of Wessex, the Princess Royal, Princess Beatrice and Princess Eugenie.

Prince George and Princess Charlotte were also present to honor their great-grandfather – the first time they have attended a large public service.
