Queen’s Jubilee: what happens over the bank holiday?

The countdown to the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee celebrations is on – and there are just three days until kick-off.

The events mark Her Majesty’s 70th anniversary on the throne and over the past nearly 70 days, the royal family has been looking back on the monarch’s reign.

On her official Twitter account, she has been tweeting a picture of the Queen from each year of her reign every day for almost two months.

On Saturday, the account hit 2017 and posted a picture of Her Majesty standing alongside Prince Charles and Camilla on the balcony of Buckingham Palace as they watched the Royal Air Force 100th Anniversary flyby.

The wider shot of this image also includes the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge, as well as Prince Harry and Meghan Markle.

But the photo had to be deleted after a short time after it was pointed out that the anniversary took place in 2018, not 2017.

Many royal fans also recalled that Meghan attended that balcony gig in 2018 – pointing out on Twitter that it couldn’t have happened in 2017 as she wasn’t yet royal.

Eventually, the photo was replaced with one of the Queen and Prince Philip feeding bananas to an elephant at Whipsnade Zoo in 2017.

Meanwhile, the Queen has vowed to make a double balcony appearance as she braves her “mobility concerns” to celebrate her 70-year reign.

Her Majesty will delight the crowd by walking in front of the facade of Buckingham Palace twice as she kicks off her Platinum Jubilee celebrations.

The Queen’s Jubilee celebrations begin on Thursday

The performances take place during the monarch’s official birthday parade on Thursday, the start of the four-day bank holiday weekend.

A royal source said: “The Queen is determined to attend the anniversary celebrations. Trooping has been brought forward a week this year to be part of the anniversary and the Queen is keen to be there.”

The monarch is also hoping to join extended family for the thanksgiving service at St Paul’s Cathedral on Friday.

However, it is also feared the Queen could miss Saturday’s Epsom Derby for the third time in her reign in a bid to “pick up a pace” for the centenary celebrations.

Sources close to the 96-year-old monarch said it was “increasingly unlikely” that she would make the trip.
