More than 115,000 Royal Mail workers are successively elected in industrial action over pay.

The privatized postal giant’s employees could go on strike in the coming months, severely disrupting mail and parcel delivery.

If there is a yes to action, it would be the biggest yet in a summer of discontent among workers demanding higher wages amid the cost of living crisis.

The Communication Workers Union accused the bosses of the privatized postal giant of being “P&O in sheep’s clothing”.

Royal Mail yesterday (Wed) announced a 2% wage increase for blue collar workers, retroactive to April 1st.

Royal Mail Chief Executive Simon Thompson said: “I am sorry that despite our best efforts we have not managed to agree on a collective bargaining agreement with the CWU.

“We have had several talks with them over the past few weeks but unfortunately we have made little progress and they have ended.

“I am also disappointed that the CWU has already decided to vote, even though we know how damaging the threat of industrial action is to our business.”

Voting for industrial action is due to open early next week.

Terry Pullinger, deputy general secretary (Post) of the CWU, criticized what he called the “ridiculous strategic decision” to push through a pay rise when inflation is at a 40-year high of 9%.

Mr Pullinger urged members to stand their ground and warned that there was a “major loss of trust” between the CWU and management.

He dubbed the company “P&O in sheep’s clothing,” a reference to the ferry company’s recent mass layoff of 800 seafarers.

Mr Pullinger said: “It’s an absolute outrage – 2% is nowhere near acceptable.”

He added, “It’s a major breakdown in relationships and trust on every level.”
