“Royals should pay for the Platinum Jubilee celebrations, not use taxpayers’ money”

Lucy Beaumont says the royal family should pay for the Platinum Jubilee celebrations as the cost of living rises and child poverty rises. Rishi Sunak used £28million in taxpayer money to celebrate the anniversary

It’s nice to see so many people uniting and celebrating, especially after the last few years we’ve been through.
And you can’t put a price on bringing communities together.
But according to last year’s budget, Chancellor Rishi Sunak poured £28million of taxpayers’ money into the platinum jubilee celebrations.
Please don’t lock me in the Tower of London for this, but with the cost of living rising and child poverty rising, wouldn’t it be nicer if the royal family paid for their party themselves? The enormous economic boost is of course very welcome, but even more so if we weren’t using taxpayers’ money.

Call me unpatriotic if you like, but I just see the value in having more social workers and ambulance drivers at a time when we’re being told time and again that there’s no money in the pot and kids’ school meals are getting smaller.
Couldn’t the royal family at least put out a memo to ban all the plastic flags and pennants? I’m told it was all paper and cloth in the 70’s. But we are living through something historic. The Queen is the first monarch to rule for 70 years, which is incredible.
And then it happened, I saw a floral anniversary tea party set (made out of cardboard), it had a cake stand and I couldn’t resist.
Then I saw online biodegradable bunting and a scone recipe and that was it, I made the invitations and rented a bouncy castle.
The Queen has been on duty for a long time. I thought you’d better show my appreciation – is it jam or cream first, ma’am?
