Today Show host Maura Derrane (52) has revealed her partying days must be “cut out” or she will be “fired” from her TV job.
The RTÉ star opened up about her ‘wild side’ to The Sunday Times, confessing that she was once on the air so drunk that she “barely could read the autocue or see who was in front”. my face.”
Prior to her current gig on the Today Show with Daithí Ó Sé, Galway-born Maura introduced Ireland AM to Mark Cagney.
Those days – from 2004 to 2006 – she admits were particularly wild.
“Oh, there’s a lot of wild things there. There are horns coming out of my head and I always push them down and put plaster on them,” she said.
“I like to go out, but I have to try to restrain myself, because the problem is that if I go out, I don’t want to go home.”
One night, the star socialized with a manager, who warned her to call it a night.

“Initially I went everywhere I was invited, but one night my boss, Andrew Hanlon, was there too.
“He seriously hit me at 11:30 p.m. while I was drinking my millionth gin and tonic, and asked me why I was still there when I was on air in the morning? I said I would be fine but he said I’ll do it and need to go home.
“I looked like the wreck of the Hesperus. I was like a corpse and could barely read the autocue or see who was in front of me,” she told The Sunday Times.
“And, of course, I have Mr. Mark Cagney by my side, he goes to bed every night at 8 o’clock. So I’ve had to pull myself together and cut out my interactions in the middle of the week. That’s it or be fired.”
Maura has always been outspoken about her party days, having previously told independent.ie that her arrival in Dublin from Inis Mór was like “the Amish on their year-end holiday”.
“We would have been fired if we had a camera phone back then,” Maura said.
“We’re rude; we’re like wild animals. We don’t know how to pose for pictures, we just show up at events for free drinks. Now you’re judged based on looks rather than personality.
“There are a lot of girls who aren’t the prettiest, but they’re crazy people (sic). They’re interesting and can attract an audience.
“Like John B Keane or something – if you can attract an audience and become a celebrity, that’s enough. You’re allowed to show personality,” she said.
Maura is married to former Fine Gael John Deasy and they have a young son, Cal (8 years old).
