RTÉ’s Bláthnaid Treacy: “That was a very warty version of me – but I’d do it all over again in a heartbeat”

For TV host Bláthnaid Treacy, attending RTE’s Ultimate Hell Week was a grueling experience, literally.

He shared photos of the numerous bumps and bruises she suffered as one of the 20 participants in the celebrity version of the grueling special forces selection course.

But Bláthnaid, 34, who appeared in tears on the show, said she’s glad viewers got to see “the real me”, a stripped-down version that’s worlds away from her usual polished exterior.

“You’re really vulnerable and I was concerned, obviously you work in TV, you’ve always done your hair and makeup and you’re tanned. I thought, ‘Right, I’m not going to have any of this.’ So that was a bit intense and you don’t look good but you don’t care. It doesn’t matter – it’s great what you’re achieving too,” she told Independent.ie.

“In a world where it’s all about looks, those few days have been more about what I can actually do and bring to the team, which has been really refreshing.”

“I wanted to show people who I am and get to know myself a little bit in that way because obviously when they see me (on TV) it’s a very polished version of me. This is a very crude, warty version of me. Now I didn’t last very long, only three episodes. But I would do it again in a heartbeat.”

A former child star, she first appeared in front of the camera when she was just three months old playing Biddy and Miley’s daughter Denise in Glenroe. She hailed the whole experience as “absolutely amazing” after making it to episode three.

“They basically throw their minds and bodies over to the DS (Hell Week instructors) and can’t really make any decisions. It was one of the hardest but most incredible things I’ve ever done. How often do you push yourself to your absolute maximum?

“It’s a good social experiment to see how you react and respond in these high-pressure situations. It’s good to know, “Am I a fight-or-flight person, am I capable of digging deep enough?”

“And I dug deep, but then it got to a point where I was like, ‘I’m not strong enough for this anymore, I just can’t do it.’ And that’s okay too. It’s really important to know your limits as well. I’ve never felt so strong in my life. I was really proud of myself for being there.”

The versatile presenter, who speaks fluent Irish, has a weekend show on 2fm as well as a spot as a reporter on RTÉ’s Today Show. But most recently, her attention has focused on renovating the home she shares with husband Charlie Moon in Stoneybatter, which she said has “gone on and on and on”.

“We bought it and a year later we finished everything. It was a big job and we had to move out and of course that was during the pandemic so it took a long time to finish. But we need to move into the house early in the summer and start putting the finishing touches on it. Now I never want to leave, it’s just the most beautiful house, I think,” she said.

She spoke as she teamed up with Irish Water for its new environment The Think Before You Flush campaign aimed to encourage people to throw away their bathroom products instead of flushing them.

A recent survey found that nearly 1 million adults living in Ireland continue to flush wipes and other toiletries down the toilet on a regular basis. Those under 35 flushed “flushable” wipes down the toilet twice as often as under 35s.

“It is important that we all play a positive role when it comes to protecting the environment. Together, small changes can make a big impact, so I want to encourage everyone to reconsider their dishwashing habits,” said Bláthnaid.
