RTÉ’s Dee Forbes is about to grill over a dumped Shane Ross interview about the Mary Lou McDonald book

RTÉ Director General Dee Forbes is called before the Oireachtas Media Committee to discuss the decision to schedule an interview with former Transport Secretary Shane Ross on his biography of Sinn Féin leader Mary Lou McDonald.

Government Deputy Chairman Brendan Griffin wrote to the committee asking that Ms Forbes be invited to a meeting to explain the channel’s decision not to air an interview with Mr Ross about his book.Mary Lou McDonald: A Republican Enigma‘.

The committee will meet today to consider the Fine Gael TD’s proposal.

It comes after Taoiseach Micheál Martin said RTÉ had questions about his decision not to air an interview with Mr Ross.

Mr Martin said: “Such a development has a chilling effect on democracy.”

The Taoiseach pointed out that the national broadcaster “takes a cautious position here for fear of being sued” as RTÉ has already been the subject of a defamation lawsuit from Ms McDonald. The decision not to air a taped interview with Mr Ross that was scheduled to be broadcast Today with Claire Byrne Broadcast on RTÉ Radio 1, is “something that requires more transparency,” he said.

He suspected the station was conservative, having been sued by a “person of weight and clout” in the person of Ms McDonald.

RTÉ said no one was given access to the recorded interview after Mr Ross suggested the broadcaster would do so before it was broadcast.

“In this case, the decision not to air was an editorial decision and was not influenced by legal issues,” she added.

Mr Ross outlined what had happened in the Sunday independent from October 9th. The issue was raised in the Dáil by Fine Gael TD Paul Kehoe, who said RTÉ has a public service duty in broadcasting.

Mr Kehoe said: “I’m not sure what they’re afraid of or who they’re afraid of – but this is censorship at its finest.

“And I think that could have some very serious consequences for the national broadcaster. And it’s a very worrying development.

“Shane Ross was able to give an interview to Newstalk, Today FM and various other independent radio stations. I think RTÉ has questions to answer.”
