Rugby Championship LIVE: Australia vs New Zealand latest results and updates – Wallabies strike back in Melbourne

New Zealand can take a step closer to securing the rugby championship with a win over Australia in Melbourne.

The All Blacks’ 50-point win over Argentina and South Africa’s win over Australia mean all four sides will advance to the penultimate round, separated by just a point, in what is proving to be the closest rugby championship in years.

The game will also be the opening game of the Bledisloe Cup, which Australia has not hosted in two decades as the Wallabies have been consistently dominated by their bitter rivals.

Ian Foster’s New Zealand have been vulnerable this season and are yet to win back-to-back games this year as France, Ireland and Argentina have all alternately beaten them, but a bonus points win would see them lift the trophy ahead of next week’s second leg in Auckland.

Australia 10-10 New Zealand, 38 minutes

Quinn Tupaea is already suffering from some knee strain – they fear it could be a pretty nasty injury for the centre, who is feeling really uncomfortable being helped through the tunnel. Beauden Barrett came on as a substitute, meaning New Zealand have reshuffled their defense – Jordie Barrett is stepping up the middle after spending a lot of time there for the Hurricanes this year.

Incidentally, Sam Cane won’t be returning after failing his HIA – Dalton Papali’i is in for what’s left.

NO TRY! Australia 10-10 New Zealand, 37 minutes

Knocked! Taukei’aho looked certain to score after another strong New Zealand punch, but Jake Gordon managed to get under the hooker and stop him on the ground, forcing Taukei’aho to throw a punch.

To attempt? Did Samisoni Taukei’aho get his second?

Ben Whitehouse has a busy few minutes and TMO is reconsulted…

YELLOW CARD! Darcy Swain is being sent to the wicked box! Australia 10-10 New Zealand, 36 minutes

Oh, that’s ugly! Really really ugly. Tupaea’s leg is pinched and he is already wrestling with two Aussies when Swain comes in from the side and rams a shoulder into the outside of the substitute New Zealander’s knee.

Swain is sent to the Sin Box while Tupaea is helped. Dalton Papali’i returns from his period on the naughty step – it will be 15 against 13 for the next ten minutes.

TMO check! Australia 10-10 New Zealand, 36 minutes

However, there is something else that TMO Ben Whitehouse wants to look at – Quinn Tupaea is in pain and receiving treatment and Whitehouse believes that Darcy Swain, just on the field, may have targeted Tupaea’s knee.

YELLOW CARD! Australia 10-10 New Zealand, 36 minutes

This is the danger of the All Blacks! They’re on the attack just past their goal-line stand, Caleb Clarke finding himself on the inside and galloping out into the open pasture. He can’t really find supportive runners who keep an eye on their own canter for the line, and Tom Wright eventually trips him.

But Wright can’t get off the ruck fast enough and he could be in trouble here. A yellow card for Wright after slowing the ball while New Zealand attempted to sweep the ball to the right.

Australia 10-10 New Zealand, 34 minutes

What a defense from New Zealand! Australia retrieve their enforcers and smash the door with a series of heavy carries, Len Ikitau, Rob Valetini, Pete Samu and Jake Gordon, all within yards of the line but somehow repelled.

And a penalty for visitors! Quinn Tupaea pulls in a tackle and bounces back to his feet, showing a definite release to please the referee and ensure New Zealand survives.

Out goes Rob Leota, who injured himself early in this move. Darcy Swain replaces him with Jed Holloway, who presumably slips back into the back row.

But Australia don’t mind a scrum against an underpowered New Zealand unit of seven. Dave Porecki yells in the face of opposite number Samisoni Taukei’aho after James Slipper was awarded a penalty for his efforts. The Wallabies go back to the profitable right corner.

Australia 10-10 New Zealand, 30 minutes

That hit has Koroibete pumped up, the supercharger whirring again as he unleashes three would-be tacklers weaving through a disjointed New Zealand chase. Gaps appear on the right after Koroibete was tied up late, but a bit of slack handling means Australia can’t make the most of it.

Australia 10-10 New Zealand, 29 minutes

The Melbourne crowd took off with the Wallabies and roared as Valetini regained the lead in a powerful counter-push to earn a scrum.

And here goes Pete Samu! A dynamite break from the open side, teleports out of a midfield maw and through a large gaping hole. Bernard Foley hits the back and Marika Koroibete hammers into Jordie Barrett, who is doing pretty well surviving contact with the ball and his ribs intact.
