Rugby Championship LIVE: Latest Updates South Africa vs Argentina – Title decider in Durban

South African rugby hosts Argentina rugby in their last rugby championship match to be played. Heading into the finals, New Zealand were top of the table on points difference, while South Africa were hot on their heels with Argentina and Australia.

The All Blacks’ big 40-14 win over Wallabies earlier on Saturday means the Springboks need to win by 40 points to take the title away from New Zealand.

Last week, the Springboks beat Argentina 36-20 in their own backyard and are hoping for an even bigger win at home. A concern for South Africa is the absence of a fly-half, as Handre Pollard is injured, Damian Willemse has suffered a concussion and Elton Janjties is out with mental health issues.

“It would have been nice to pick Elton, but mental health is a big deal,” said coach Jacques Nienaber. “There would have been too much outside pressure on him and from a human point of view it would have been unfair to bring him back. Elton would have been under too much pressure and we put the human side first.”

The situation sees South Africa turning to Frans Steyn, a veteran player but who has not started a Test in the No 10 shirt since 2008. See how Steyn and co are progressing and follow all the action with us below:

HALFTIME! South Africa 17-7 Argentina

Lavanini’s attempt just before half-time was unexpected, but South Africa are still in control of this friendly. However, their chance of winning the rugby championship is dwindling.

From here it looks like a tall order to win by 40 points.

TO ATTEMPT! South Africa 17-7 Argentina

40 minutes – One last chance for Argentina, back to 15 men with the return of Gonzalez, before half-time. They get the ball in the South African half and a Carrera kick into the 22 causes chaos.

No one can claim it, eventually Gonzalez steps in and recycles to Carreras with an outsource. Tomas Lavanini then picks up at the base and dives to the right of the jerk and stretches for the TRY! A successful conversion by Carreras reduces the gap to 10.

Out of nowhere, however, the Pumas are back.

PENALTY! South Africa 17-0 Argentina

38 minutes – South Africa actually points to the posts of that distance penalty. Luckily they have Franz Steyn, perhaps the first long penalty in rugby history. He slams it between the posts without bothering to extend the lead.

South Africa 14-0 Argentina

37 minutes – Argentina try an angled penetration, but it’s too long for Moroni to have a real chance to claim the left clank. He slips bravely, but it’s out for a springbok lineout.

A box-kick from Hendrickse is fought off and although Argentina goes down with it, Bertranou is caught in the glitch and Wiese surpasses a penalty. Good job from the #8.

South Africa 14-0 Argentina

34 minutes – Argentina tries to run a few phases around the five-metre line but the South African defense is disciplined and then the Pumas are pinged to cross.

Boks clears midway but is then punished for not being straight on the alley. Scrum Argentina at the ten meter line in the home half.

South Africa 14-0 Argentina

32 minutes – Messy alley but Montoya collects the loose ball and carries forward. Another penalty for Argentina and another kick to the corner.

South Africa 14-0 Argentina

30 minutes – Matera finally comes out, Guido Petti replaces him. Big loss for the Cougars. Joel Sclavi also works as a prop for Eduardo Bello.

Argentina does have some possession time here, however, as they go through a few stages in Boks territory. They win the penalty and step into the 22 for the lineout. They’re still down to 14 men, with Gonzalez the scapegoat, remember.

TO ATTEMPT! South Africa 14-0 Argentina

28 minutes – Again good mouth defense by Argentina but Siya Kolisi sneaks through from behind and scores for a second Springbok attempt!

Good job by the skipper and Steyn’s conversion from the outside is good. 14-0. They’re getting close to that 40-point lead.

South Africa 7-0 Argentina

28 minutes – Pablo Matera has been undergoing treatment for some time and looks dazed. He’s holding a towel to his head. But he can continue.

We’ll have that South Africa penalty when we restart. Kicked in the corner.

South Africa 7-0 Argentina

28 minutes – A few phases after the lane, Hendrickse shoots towards the line and is stopped millimeters too short. Le Roux then goes low and tries to squirm but he is held up on the line.

Another Springbok penalty. The second attempt is pending… Rugby Championship LIVE: Latest Updates South Africa vs Argentina – Title decider in Durban
