Professional rugby league player Olly Ashall-Bott witnessed the excitement of England’s victory in the Euro 2022 final at the hands of his girlfriend Georgia Stanway, one of the triumphant lionesses.

The Toulouse Olympique full-back passed out from his coach Sylvain Houles to be present in Saturday’s Wembley final against Germany and had a chance to attend the after-match party before catching an early-morning flight back to France took to prepare for Thursday’s Super League game at Hull KR.

“I’m so glad I had the opportunity to visit them,” Ashall-Bott, 24, who flew to London after his side’s game against Hull on Friday night, told the PA news agency.

“I hadn’t seen England play before because our games didn’t match up – when I played she played – but we had the weekend off and Sylvain let me go – I don’t think he could have said no.

“And what a game! They did the job in front of a full stadium, I was amazed and so happy for them and the team.

“It sounds weird, but it feels like I played in it myself. Because we’re so close I think I feel the same way they do – maybe not quite as much but I still feel like I won too.

“And sharing moments like that with her is just incredible for me. There’s a video on TV of me hugging her at Wembley, memories you never forget.

“I have to go to the after-match party and see all the girls – I know most of them because I’ve been with Georgia a long time.

“I’m not going to say too much because she’s going to be big-headed, but she knows how proud I am of her.”

Stanway, 23, who scored England’s winner against Spain in the quarter-finals, will get a chance to return the favor when she sees her boyfriend in action at Craven Park on Thursday.

And the globetrotting couple will meet in Toulouse later this month when Stanway plays for their new club Bayern Munich in the AMOS French Cup, a competition also joined by Manchester United and played at the Ernest Wallon Stadium, the also the home stadium is from Olympique.

“I like to think they did it on purpose,” said Ashall-Bott, who is planning to spend two months of honeymoon with his girlfriend in Germany after leaving Manchester City.

Meanwhile, Ashall-Bott believes the Lionesses’ triumph can leave an indelible mark on world sport once they wrap up the celebrations.

“I don’t think they’ve stopped partying yet,” he said. “I said to her, ‘Enjoy these moments because they don’t come often.’

“I just think it’s massive for every sport out there, all genders. When I first got together with Georgia a few years ago, just over 1,000 people came to a game.

“I’ve been totally behind it since I met Georgia and it’s crazy how big it’s gotten, for women in general, forget football and sports, it’s huge for women.

“I think you can no longer compare men’s and women’s football, it’s just sport now.”

Stanway, who hails from Barrow-in-Furness in Cumbria, is moving to Germany on Sunday to sign a two-year deal with Bayern Munich.
