Russia has announced that it will block Facebook, citing “Facebook’s discrimination against Russian media and information resources.”
It comes after several social media platforms moved to block Russian state media sources, including RT, from their apps and websites.
The Russian ban on Facebook follows increasing sanctions on tech companies restricting services to Russia, its companies and government agencies.
Today, Web Summit said it should ban all Russian “government officials and agencies, state-controlled media, state-backed companies and companies with ties to the Russian government from attending Web Summit and Collision.”
It added that “all Russian companies, including public and private companies and start-ups, will be banned from attending Web Summit and Collision.”
Earlier this week, Apple said it would “pause” sales of iPhones and Macs in Russia and limit services there like Apple Pay. Dell has also restricted its sales to Russia, while Google and Microsoft have removed Russian state media outlet RT from their app stores.
Facebook owner Meta banned Russian state media from buying ads on Facebook and Instagram, as did Twitter. TikTok has also restricted access to media like RT.
Ireland-based multinational tech companies like Intel have fallen under US export controls that bar them from selling products to large swathes of Russia’s economy.
Russian authorities have passed a new law that would punish spreading “fake news” about the invasion of Ukraine with up to 15 years in prison. The BBC then announced that it would discontinue its activities in Russia.
