Thousands of military personnel continue to rehearse with ballistic missile launchers and tanks for this year’s Victory Day Parade in Russia, when Vladimir Putin could declare war on the West.

Every year on May 9th, Russia celebrates its victory over Nazi Germany in 1945 at the end of World War II, and this year it has a special meaning.

Putin’s forces invaded Ukraine on February 24 in what he described as a “special operation to denazify” the country, and it was widely expected that he would use this year’s May celebrations to announce a success in that mission.

But as Russia has met fierce resistance from the Ukrainians, the invasion did not go according to plan and they were forced to focus their attacks on eastern Ukraine after failing to overthrow Kyiv.

Much effort was put into the Victory Parade this year, which sees regular rehearsals of heavy military parade through the streets of Moscow and St. Petersburg in a deliberate show of force.

State media showed the military convoys and countless soldiers marched across Schlossplatz on Thursday evening.

It comes as British Defense Secretary Ben Wallace said he would not be surprised if Putin now uses the May Day parade to declare war on the West instead.

The Russian Defense Ministry released an interactive map of the parade on Friday, which showed 33 marching columns of Russian troops, cadets and members of security agencies, the reported Moscow times.

Weapons on display included T-14 tanks, S-400 air defense systems, rocket launchers and armored personnel carriers.

The Air Division displayed 77 aircraft, including long-range Tu-22M3 bombers, Su-57 stealth fighters, and attack and transport helicopters.

Further rehearsals are scheduled to take place on May 4th and 7th before the big day for Putin’s regime.

No foreign dignitaries have been invited this year as Russia faces global isolation.

Mr Wallace has said that Putin could declare war on the West and begin a “mass mobilization” of Russians to fight in Ukraine during the May Day celebrations.

He told LBC: “I wouldn’t be surprised. . . that he will probably declare on May Day that ‘we are now at war with the Nazis of the world and we must mobilize the Russian people en masse’.”

He continued: “Putin, who has failed on almost all goals, may try to consolidate what he has. . . and just be a kind of cancer within the country. We need to help the Ukrainians effectively free the limpet from the rock and keep the momentum pushing it back.”
