Russia has closed the world’s deepest hole known as the ‘Well to Hell’ after solving mysteries on the way to the center of the earth

THE deepest man-made hole in the world was dug in a scientific experiment in Russia.

It has since been sealed, but not before scientists were able to unveil many secrets and mysteries beneath the earth’s surface.

What is the Kola well?

Russia’s Kola Superdeep Borehole was created by the Soviets in the name of science, so they could learn more about what’s really beneath our feet and dig to unknown depths.

It extends 40,000 feet below the surface – but it’s only covered by a rusting metal lid.

The project to drill into the earth’s surface began near Murmansk in the 1970s when Soviet scientists wanted to learn more about the earth’s crust.

Over two decades, they managed to dig more than 7.5 miles deep into the earth.

Why did Russia seal the deepest hole in the world?

In 1992, the scientists had to stop drilling because the temperature was around 180 degrees Celsius.

This was much hotter than scientists had predicted.

Experts have yet to find a way to solve this temperature problem if they want to continue drilling and not destroy all of their equipment in the process.

Drilling halted in August 1994 but was said to have halted due to a lack of funding and not temperature issues.

The Kola Superdeep Borehole is 23 centimeters in diameter and its metal lid is welded, making it unlikely anyone will ever fall off.

Locals in the area say the hole is so deep you can hear the screams of people being tortured in Hell, hence the nickname “the Well to Hell”.

Which mysteries have been solved?

The researchers found that there is water 12 kilometers deep in the earth’s crust, although this was previously thought impossible.

They also found 24 new species of long-dead single-celled organisms and gained access to rocks that were 2.7 billion years old.
