Ukrainian authorities across the country have reported fresh Russian rocket attacks and shelling, killing at least 16 more civilians.
The deaths came after Russia’s top military announced it would step up its attack on its neighbor.
Russian officials said Defense Minister Sergei Shoigu “issued instructions to further intensify unit actions in all theaters of operations to eliminate the possibility of the Kiev regime launching massive rocket and artillery attacks on civilian infrastructure and residents of settlements in Donbass and other regions.” ”
The new Russian attacks hit areas in northern, eastern and southern Ukraine.
Kharkiv, Ukraine’s second-largest city, has seen particularly heavy bombardment in recent days, with Ukrainian officials and local commanders raising fears a second full-scale Russian attack on the northern city may be imminent.
At least three civilians were killed and three others injured in a Russian missile attack on the northern Ukrainian city of Chuhuiv near Kharkiv and just 75 miles from the Russian border on Saturday, a regional police chief said.
Serhiy Bolvinov, deputy chief of Kharkiv regional police, said the rockets partially destroyed a two-story apartment building.
“Four Russian rockets, believed to have been fired from around (the Russian city of) Belgorod at around 3:30 a.m. at night, hit a residential building, a school and administrative buildings,” Mr Bolvinov wrote on Facebook.
“The bodies of three people were found under the rubble. Three others were injured. The victims are civilians,” he added.
In the neighboring Sumy region, one civilian was killed and at least seven others injured after Russians opened mortar and artillery fire on three towns and villages not far from the Russian border, regional governor Dmytro Zhyvytsky said on Telegram.
In the embattled eastern region of Donetsk, seven civilians have been killed and 14 injured in attacks on cities in the past 24 hours, the governor said on Saturday morning.
Nearby, however, Ukrainian troops repulsed a Russian night attack on a strategic eastern highway, said Serhiy Haidai, the Luhansk region governor.
Mr Haidai said Russia had been trying to seize the main road link between the cities of Lysychansk and Bakhmut “for more than two months”.
“They still cannot control several kilometers of this road,” Mr. Haidai wrote in a Telegram post.
Russia’s military campaign has focused on the Donbass, which includes the Donetsk and Luhansk regions, but Russian forces have also bombed other parts of the country in a relentless push to wrest territory from Ukraine and break the morale of its leaders, troops and troops civilians.
In the south of Ukraine, according to regional governor Vitaliy Kim, two people were injured by Russian shelling in the town of Bashtanka, northeast of the Black Sea town of Mykolaiv.
