A massive ICBM took center stage as the Russian military prepared for next month’s victory ceremony, by which time Vladimir Putin wants to be able to announce the “success” of the invasion of Ukraine.

Ukraine has announced that Russia will launch a new offensive in the east of the country on Monday with explosions along the front lines and attacks in other regions.

At the same time, in Russia, thousands of soldiers took part in rehearsals for the victory ceremony scheduled for May 9, when Putin said he wanted his forces to deal a decisive blow to Ukraine.

In addition to the soldiers, tanks and other military equipment, it was the intercontinental ballistic missile that stood out in the rehearsals. It was a show of force and a reminder of what is at stake as tensions between Russia and the West simmer.

The RD-24 missile launcher can launch up to ten nuclear warheads simultaneously at targets in Europe or the United States.

Putin’s offensive in Ukraine is understood to have lasted much longer than the belligerent president anticipated as the nation’s armed forces dug in to frustrate and repel a Russian army that at times seemed lacking in morale and tactics .

The Victory Day event is held every year in Russia to celebrate the defeat of Germany at the end of World War II, when Joseph Stalin’s forces fought a long and hard battle against the Nazis.

Now, decades later, and this year’s celebration will have added meaning as it takes place during Russia’s shelling of Ukrainian cities to force them into submission.

Earlier this month, Russia withdrew troops from northern Ukraine and around the capital Kyiv, but it appears to have been a reshuffle of forces, with renewed impetus for the invasion now beginning in the east.

Russia suffered a humiliating blow last week with the sinking of its flagship in the Black Sea, the Moskva, and has since retaliated with heavy shelling of cities.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said Russia started the “Battle for Donbass” in the east on Monday and “a very large part of the entire Russian army is now concentrating on this offensive”.

“No matter how many Russian troops they send there, we will fight. We will defend ourselves,” he vowed in a video address.

Zelenskyy’s chief of staff Andriy Yermak called it “the second phase of the war” and assured the Ukrainians that their forces could repel the offensive.

“Believe in our army, it’s very strong,” he said.

Ukrainian media reported a series of explosions, some powerful, along the front line in the Donetsk region, with shelling taking place in Marinka, Slavyansk and Kramatorsk.

Ukrainian local officials and local media also said explosions were heard in Kharkiv in northeastern Ukraine, Mykolaiv in the south and Zaporizhzhia in the southeast.

Ukrainian officials said Russian shelling killed four people in the Donetsk region on Monday, while a man and woman were killed in Kharkiv when shells hit a playground near a residential building.

They said a Russian missile attack also killed seven people in Lviv, the first civilian casualties in the western city about 40 miles from Poland.

Ukraine’s top security official Oleksiy Danilov said Russian forces attempted to breach Ukraine’s defenses “along almost the entire front line of the Donetsk, Luhansk and Kharkiv regions” on Monday morning.

Pushed back by Ukrainian resistance in the north, Moscow has refocused its ground offensive in the two eastern provinces known as Donbass, while launching long-range attacks on other targets, including the capital Kyiv.

Donbass has been the focus of Russia’s campaign to destabilize Ukraine, which began in 2014 when the Kremlin installed proxies to set up two separatist “people’s republics” in the former Soviet state. It is also home to much of Ukraine’s industrial wealth, including coal and steel.

Russia’s Defense Ministry said it hit hundreds of military targets in Ukraine overnight. Missiles fired from the air destroyed 16 military installations in the Kharkiv, Zaporizhia, Donetsk and Dnepropetrovsk regions and the port of Mykolayiv, located in southern and eastern Ukraine.

It added that the Russian Air Force launched attacks against 108 areas where Ukrainian forces were concentrated, and Russian artillery hit 315 Ukrainian military targets.
