Ukraine: Russian jets attack Ukrainian army positions

Russian troops were filmed attacking a railway tunnel linking Ukraine with Slovakia to prevent military supplies from the west from reaching Kyiv.

Kalibr cruise missiles have hit the Beskydy railway tunnel in the Carpathians, sources say.

A family with clear fear in their voice recorded the attack in the Lviv region and said that two rockets hit the area.

Ukrainian official Anton Gerashchenko and Lviv Governor Maksym Kozytskyy confirmed the attack late in the evening.

“The goal is to try to jam railroad communications and stop the supply of fuel and weapons from our allies,” he said.

The tunnel lies on an important railway connection from Ukraine to the West

Russia is also aiming for a second tunnel, he said.

Russian sources also said the attacks involved Kalibr missiles.

This type of strategic missile was previously used in the Ukraine war to destroy vital infrastructure.

In April, pictures showed Kalibr missiles being loaded onto a submarine at the naval port of Sevastopol in annexed Crimea.

The extent of any damage to the Beskids tunnel was unclear on the link between Ukraine and NATO member Slovakia – a rail link between Lviv and the EU.

The first tunnel was built in 1886, a second one was inaugurated in 2018 as a gateway to Europe.

A voice can be heard on the video saying: that the strike went towards Stryi.

When another asks, “What?” The answer comes, “Look there! Two bombs…”

It comes as Ukraine, locked in a bitter battle against the invading Russian army, received a boost when the United States announced a $700 million weapons package for Kyiv that includes advanced missile systems with a range of up to 50 miles will include.

Russia accused the US of “pouring fuel on the fire”.

Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov said the delivery of the rocket launchers increased the risk of a “third country” being drawn into the conflict.

US Secretary of State Antony Blinken said Ukraine had promised not to use the systems to hit targets in Russia.

US President Joe Biden hopes that expanding Ukraine’s artillery range will help push Russia to negotiate an end to the war, now in its fourth month.
