Russia will drastically cut back on military activities around Kyiv and Chernihiv in Ukraine, one of Vladimir Putin’s top aides said today.
Deputy Defense Minister Alexander Fomin said the decision was made in the interest of pursuing more peaceful negotiations between the countries.
It comes amid hopes that a meeting between Putin and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy could be held in the coming days.
Ukrainian negotiators have proposed applying neutrality status with international guarantees to protect it from attack.
Negotiators say they will not join alliances or host bases of foreign troops – but will be guaranteed security in a way similar to NATO’s collective defense clause.
The countries identified as being allowed to support these guarantees are Israel and NATO members Canada, Poland and Turkey.
