Britain will “disappear” in World War III, warns Russian state television
The UK will “physically cease to exist” if the new standoff in Lithuania triggers a nuclear third world war, a retired Russian general and military expert has warned.
Lieutenant General Evgeny Buzhinsky told Russian state television the West is playing with fire in blockading Russia’s Kaliningrad exclave to prevent sanctioned goods from reaching territory via NATO-state Lithuania.
He lashed out at British General Sir Patrick Sanders, who took command of Britain’s land forces this week, with a call for troops to prepare to fight and defeat Russian forces in a third world war.
“He doesn’t understand that Britain will physically cease to exist as a result of World War III,” Buzhinsky said.
“The island will disappear, so I have no idea where he or his descendants will live.”

In his message to the troops, General Sanders had said: “I am the first Chief of Staff since 1941 to assume command of the Army in the shadow of a land war in Europe involving a continental power…
“The scale of the ongoing threat from Russia shows that we have entered a new era of insecurity. It is my sole duty to make our army as deadly and effective as possible. The time is now and we can seize the opportunity.”
Buzhinsky warned that alongside the war in Ukraine, the situation in Kaliningrad was “deeply serious” and claimed the West had ulterior motives.
He urged Vladimir Putin to respond immediately and send nuclear weapons to Kaliningrad, the former Prussian outpost of Koenigsberg and the country’s westernmost territory wedged between Lithuania and Poland and also the headquarters of the Kremlin’s Baltic Fleet.
“This is a long game to push us out of the Baltic, an attempt to blockade and cut off Kaliningrad and eventually take it from us,” he claimed.
The West intended to “completely blockade Kaliningrad economically until our people howl with poverty”.
Putin should “repudiate the 1991 recognition of Lithuania, renounce the agreement with the EU on Lithuania, including at its borders, and then shut off Lithuania’s energy supplies,” he said.
“And then we must finally take military action.”

Buzhinsky, who has held senior positions in Russia’s Defense Ministry, has urged the Kremlin to take control of the so-called Suwalkovsky Corridor – the supply route through Lithuania from Russian ally Belarus.
“We must demonstratively bring nuclear weapons to Kaliningrad, our Iskanders,” he told pro-Putin TV presenter Yevgeny Popov on the Rossiya 1 channel.
Iskander missiles are currently stationed in Kaliningrad, but without nuclear warheads, he said.
“We have to do something. We need to increase our military presence on the border with Lithuania, as we did on the border with Ukraine in December last year and in January this year.”
Russia should first tell the Americans through confidential channels that they are playing with fire.

He added: “You guys are actually going to play to the point where Russia won’t stop because this is a threat to our national security, an attack on our sovereignty.”
Buzhinsky then warned: “The world will feel it. The Ukrainian grain will seem like a joke compared to our decisive steps.”
He was asked: “In other words, is this war with NATO?”
He replied: “Yes – what else do we do? Otherwise they just strangle us. We cannot stop, otherwise they will take Kaliningrad from us.”
Putin’s spokesman Dmitry Peskov warned that all trust between the West and Moscow was now gone.

“Relations between Russia and the West will not return to previous levels because Moscow will never trust such ‘partners’ again,” he told MSNBC.
He warned: “It will be a protracted crisis, but we will never trust the West again.”
Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova called the West’s actions against Lithuania “openly hostile”.
“Lithuania must understand that characterizing Vilnius’ actions in relation to the Kaliningrad transit as ‘hostile’ means that the time for talks is up,” she told pro-Kremlin TV presenter Vladimir Solovyov.
“It’s you [the Lithuanian authorities] who behave aggressively. They have crossed the line of international law towards unkind, crude actions.

“They are the ones who behave provocatively, aggressively – hostilely.”
Lithuania informed the Kaliningrad Railway that the transit of some goods from Russia will be restricted from June 18 due to EU sanctions.
Kaliningrad Governor Anton Alikhanov said the move was illegal and violated the agreements the country committed to when it joined the EU.
Between 2002 and 2009, Buzhinsky, 72, was the head of the International Treaties Directorate and deputy head of the Main Directorate for International Military Cooperation at the Russian Defense Ministry.
