Russian court finds Alexei Navalny guilty of fraud – POLITICO

A Russian court on Tuesday found opposition leader and Kremlin critic Alexei Navalny guilty of fraud.

Last week, Russian prosecutors asked for 13 years in a high-security facility for Navalny – a longtime outspoken opponent of Russian President Vladimir Putin – who is already serving time behind bars.

On Tuesday, Judge Margarita Kotova said the court found that Navalny had “committed fraud, stealing property of others by an organized group”. according to AFP.

Navalny gave a statement from the prison colony where he is currently being held to the court. He denounced the terms of his trial, saying, referring to Russia’s invasion of Ukraine: “Fighting this war is everyone’s duty.”

Prosecutors have also asked the court to fine Navalny 1.2 million rubles (about 10,000 euros).

Navalny was originally arrested on his return to Russia in January 2021 after being treated in Germany for an alleged Kremlin-sanctioned poisoning (the government has denied involvement in the poisoning). Russian authorities then slapped Navalny with a two-and-a-half-year sentence for alleged probation violations. Russian court finds Alexei Navalny guilty of fraud – POLITICO
