A Russian fighter jet has crashed into a burning wreckage near the Ukrainian border.

A video shows the wreckage of the fighter jet burned in Russia’s Belgorod region, which borders Ukraine’s Luhansk, Kharkiv and Sumy regions.

The cause of the crash was not immediately clear due to suspicions that it may have been shot down, and the crash site is about 32 miles from the Ukrainian border.

The pilot ejected safely, according to Russian reports, which denied he was hit by Ukraine.

Russia’s Western Military District said the Su-25 is on a training flight rather than a combat mission, and suggested a “technical malfunction” as a possible cause.

There were also claims that it hit low-power cables.

However, the Readovka media agency claimed that there were no power poles nearby.

An eyewitness saw that two fighter jets had flown and then suddenly a column of smoke appeared.

The second plane flew around the crash site.

“A Su-25 crashed today during a planned training flight in the Belgorod region,” the Russian military statement said.

“The pilot got out and was evacuated to the base airfield. The health of the pilot is not endangered. The plane crashed in a deserted place. There was no destruction on the ground.

“According to preliminary findings, a technical fault could be the cause of the accident.”
